Agricultural Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for tractors, loaders, farm implements, hay equipment, tillage equipment, planting equipment, and other agricultural machinery. Farmers have brought hydraulic cylinders to Iron Ax for repair for years, from routine leaking cylinders to damaged cylinders requiring machining, welding, fabrication, or replacement components.

Whether your agricultural cylinder is leaking, drifting, losing lifting power, bypassing internally, or has a bent rod, damaged barrel, worn gland, broken mount, damaged piston, or failed seals, Iron Ax has the in-house capabilities to evaluate the problem and provide a practical repair solution.

Our hydraulic cylinder facility is supported by a full-service machine shop and fabrication shop, allowing us to repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Hydraulic Cylinder Repair for Tractors and Farm Equipment

Agricultural equipment depends on hydraulic cylinders for lifting, steering, folding, tilting, positioning, loading, cutting, planting, tillage, material handling, and many other functions. These cylinders operate in dirt, dust, mud, weather, and demanding working conditions that can eventually cause seal failure, rod damage, barrel wear, corrosion, mounting damage, or internal hydraulic bypassing.

Iron Ax repairs agricultural hydraulic cylinders ranging from relatively small implement cylinders to larger cylinders used on tractors, loaders, and heavy farm machinery. We inspect the complete cylinder and determine whether it needs repacking, rebuilding, machining, component replacement, welding, or a more extensive repair.

Farm Equipment Hydraulic Cylinders We Repair

Hydraulic cylinders are used throughout modern farm equipment. Iron Ax can evaluate cylinders from many types of agricultural machinery and implements.

Farm Tractors
Front-End Loaders
Disc Harrows
Plows & Tillage Equipment
Planters & Seeders
Hay Balers
Hay Rakes
Rotary Cutters & Mowers
Sprayers
Grain Equipment
Farm Wagons & Trailers
Other Farm Implements

Tractor Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Tractors may use hydraulic cylinders on front-end loaders, three-point systems, steering systems, attachments, backhoes, and other equipment. A leaking or damaged tractor cylinder can reduce lifting capacity, allow an attachment to drift, create hydraulic oil loss, or prevent the equipment from operating correctly.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect tractor hydraulic cylinders and determine whether the problem involves seals, the chrome rod, cylinder barrel, gland, piston, mounting ends, or other components. When damaged components cannot be reused, our machine shop can manufacture many replacement parts in-house.

Farm Implement Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Farm implements use hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower equipment, fold wings, adjust cutting or working height, control positioning, operate attachments, and perform many other functions. These cylinders may spend much of their life outdoors and can experience corrosion, damaged chrome, contamination, worn seals, bent rods, or damaged mounting points.

Bring the complete cylinder to Iron Ax whenever possible. We can inspect the cylinder and determine whether it needs a routine repack or a more extensive rebuild involving machining, rod replacement, barrel work, welding, or replacement components.

Common Agricultural Hydraulic Cylinder Problems

✓ External hydraulic oil leaks
✓ Cylinder drift
✓ Loss of lifting force
✓ Internal hydraulic bypassing
✓ Bent hydraulic cylinder rods
✓ Pitted or scored chrome rods
✓ Worn or scored cylinder barrels
✓ Damaged glands and pistons
✓ Broken clevises or rod eyes
✓ Worn mounting pins and bushings
✓ Damaged cylinder mounts
✓ Seal failure and contamination
✓ Corrosion from outdoor exposure
✓ Damaged or obsolete components

Bent or Damaged Agricultural Cylinder Rods

A bent, scratched, pitted, or damaged chrome rod can quickly damage new seals and cause a repaired cylinder to begin leaking again. Farm equipment rods are especially vulnerable to corrosion, impacts, side loading, and damage while equipment is being used or stored outdoors.

Iron Ax stocks chrome rod material and manufactures replacement hydraulic cylinder rods in-house. We can machine threads, shoulders, grooves, rod eyes, clevises, and other features required by the original cylinder design.

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house. Our fabrication and welding capabilities also allow us to repair or manufacture clevises, rod eyes, mounting ends, brackets, pins, bushings, and other components when they are part of the cylinder problem.

This gives Iron Ax the ability to handle much more than a basic seal replacement. When an agricultural cylinder has mechanical damage or replacement components are difficult to obtain, we can evaluate whether the damaged parts can be repaired or manufactured in-house.

Older and Hard-to-Find Agricultural Cylinders

Farm equipment often remains in service for many years. When a hydraulic cylinder fails on an older tractor or implement, an OEM replacement may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or difficult to locate.

Iron Ax can inspect the existing cylinder and determine whether it can be rebuilt. If a rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, or other component is damaged or unavailable, our machine shop and fabrication capabilities may allow us to repair or manufacture the required component.

When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can also evaluate the application for custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing .

Hydraulic Hoses for Farm Equipment

Iron Ax also manufactures hydraulic hose assemblies for tractors, farm implements, loaders, construction equipment, and other hydraulic machinery. If a failed cylinder is accompanied by a damaged hose, bring the hose with you and we can evaluate both problems.

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every agricultural hydraulic cylinder needs the same repair. Some cylinders only require repacking and new seals. Others may require a replacement rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, mount, pin, bushing, or other component.

When an original cylinder is badly damaged, obsolete, or difficult to replace, manufacturing a replacement may also be practical. Bring the cylinder to Iron Ax and let us inspect what you have before assuming the entire cylinder must be replaced.
