Backhoe Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for backhoes, tractor-loader-backhoes, and related construction, utility, agricultural, municipal, and excavation equipment. We work on boom cylinders, dipper or stick cylinders, bucket cylinders, loader lift cylinders, loader tilt cylinders, stabilizer cylinders, steering cylinders, and other hydraulic cylinders used on backhoes of many sizes and brands.
Whether your backhoe cylinder is leaking, drifting, losing power, bypassing internally, or has a bent rod, damaged barrel, worn gland, broken mount, damaged piston, or failed seals, Iron Ax has the experience and in-house capabilities to evaluate the problem and provide a practical solution.
Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, fabrication shop, and machine shop allow us to repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Backhoe Boom Cylinder Repair
The boom cylinder raises, lowers, and supports the backhoe boom during digging, trenching, loading, and excavation work. These cylinders are exposed to heavy loads, shock forces, repeated cycling, contamination, and side loading.
A leaking or damaged boom cylinder can reduce digging performance, allow the boom to drift, create unsafe movement, and take the machine out of service. Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder, evaluate the chrome rod, barrel, piston, gland, seals, mounts, and related components, and determine whether it should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.
Dipper and Stick Cylinder Repair
The dipper or stick cylinder controls the movement of the backhoe arm between the boom and bucket. These cylinders can suffer from bent rods, damaged chrome, seal failure, worn barrels, broken mounts, and internal bypassing caused by heavy digging and uneven loading.
If the cylinder will not hold position, moves slowly, leaks hydraulic oil, or lacks normal digging force, Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and determine whether the repair requires seals, rod replacement, barrel work, gland or piston manufacturing, mount repair, or complete replacement.
Backhoe Bucket Cylinder Repair
Backhoe bucket cylinders experience high digging and breakout forces during trenching, excavation, demolition, stump removal, loading, and general construction work. These cylinders can develop external leaks, internal bypassing, bent rods, worn barrels, damaged glands, or failed mounting components.
Iron Ax repairs and rebuilds backhoe bucket cylinders and can manufacture replacement rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, mounts, pins, bushings, and other components when required.
Loader Lift and Tilt Cylinder Repair
The front-loader section of a backhoe uses hydraulic cylinders to raise the loader arms and control the bucket angle. Lift and tilt cylinders may experience seal failure, rod damage, worn barrels, internal bypassing, damaged mounts, and pin or bushing wear.
If the loader arms drift, the bucket will not hold position, hydraulic oil is leaking, or lifting and breakout power have been reduced, the cylinders should be inspected to determine the cause of the failure.
Backhoe Stabilizer Cylinder Repair
Stabilizer cylinders lower and raise the outriggers that support the machine during backhoe operation. Because these cylinders carry a significant portion of the machine’s weight while digging, leakage or internal bypassing can allow the machine to settle or shift during operation.
Iron Ax can repair stabilizer cylinders with leaking seals, damaged rods, worn barrels, broken mounts, damaged pistons, or other internal problems. We can also manufacture replacement components when required.
Common Backhoe Cylinder Problems
Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities
Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. When required, we can also accommodate larger cylinders using specialized handling and setup procedures.
Bent Backhoe Cylinder Rod Replacement
A bent or damaged backhoe cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. A damaged rod can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, cause side loading, create internal wear, and lead to another failure.
Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the new rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.
Cylinder Mount, Pin, and Bushing Problems
Cylinder failure may be caused or accelerated by worn pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, loader linkage, backhoe linkage, stabilizer mounts, or other mounting points. Excessive movement and misalignment can side-load the cylinder rod, damage seals, wear the gland, bend the rod, and shorten the life of the repair.
Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged cylinder mounts, clevises, eyes, pins, bushings, and related components when they are part of the failure.
If the backhoe repair also involves damaged loader or digging linkage, worn bores, structural steel, pins, bushings, welding, or machining, visit our Heavy Equipment Repair, Fabrication & Machining page.
When backhoe pins and bushings have damaged the loader, boom, stick, bucket, or cylinder mounting bores, learn more about our heavy equipment line boring and bore restoration services.
Iron Ax also manufactures backhoe boom, stick, bucket, linkage, and cylinder-mount pins and bushings.
When an original pin is bent, broken, worn, obsolete, or unavailable, Iron Ax can manufacture custom replacement backhoe pins for the loader, boom, stick, bucket, linkage, and cylinder mounts.
Iron Ax also repairs cracked or damaged backhoe loader arms, boom components, digging linkage, cylinder mounts, brackets, and other heavy equipment structural components .
Custom Replacement Backhoe Cylinders
OEM backhoe cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older, imported, modified, or specialized equipment. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.
Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete hydraulic cylinder solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.
Backhoe Brands and Equipment
Iron Ax repairs hydraulic cylinders used on many backhoe and tractor-loader-backhoe brands and equipment configurations. Availability of parts, dimensions, and original specifications varies by machine, but we can evaluate cylinders from John Deere, Caterpillar, Case, JCB, New Holland, Kubota, Ford, Komatsu, Terex, Volvo, Mahindra, Massey Ferguson, and other manufacturers.
Brand names are used only to describe equipment applications. Iron Ax is an independent hydraulic cylinder repair and manufacturing company.
What to Bring or Tell Us
Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?
Not every backhoe cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long OEM lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.
Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
