Crane Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders used on mobile cranes, truck-mounted cranes, rough-terrain cranes, carry-deck cranes, knuckle-boom cranes, industrial lifting equipment, and other hydraulic crane applications.

Depending on the crane design, hydraulic cylinders may control boom elevation, telescoping sections, outriggers, stabilizers, steering, jib functions, and other machine movements. These cylinders can operate under substantial loads and must reliably hold position while the equipment is working.

Iron Ax has the hydraulic cylinder repair equipment, machining capabilities, and in-house manufacturing resources required to handle everything from routine resealing to damaged rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and complete replacement cylinders.

Crane Boom Lift Cylinder Repair

Boom lift or boom elevation cylinders raise and position the crane boom and may carry substantial load throughout operation. Leakage, internal bypassing, damaged seals, worn components, or cylinder drift can affect boom control and the ability of the cylinder to maintain position.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder, evaluate the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, mounts, clevises, and related components, and determine whether the cylinder requires repacking, rebuilding, component replacement, or more extensive repair.

Crane hydraulic cylinder repair, machining, rod manufacturing and cylinder rebuilding at Iron Ax

Crane Telescope Cylinder Repair

Hydraulic cranes with telescoping booms may use one or more cylinders to extend and retract the boom sections. These cylinders can be long, heavily loaded, and more complex than many standard industrial cylinders.

Problems may include external leakage, internal bypassing, damaged rods, worn barrels, seal failure, damaged mounting components, contamination, or mechanical damage caused by improper alignment or loading.

Iron Ax can evaluate the specific cylinder design and determine what repair or manufacturing work is practical. For complex multi-stage or specialized crane cylinders, bring the complete cylinder and all available crane and cylinder information so the assembly can be properly evaluated before work begins.

Outrigger and Stabilizer Cylinder Repair

Outriggers and stabilizers help support and level many crane systems during lifting operations. Their hydraulic cylinders must extend, retract, and hold position reliably under load.

An outrigger or stabilizer cylinder that leaks externally, bypasses internally, drifts, settles, or has a damaged rod can interfere with proper equipment operation. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and determine whether the failure involves seals, the rod, barrel, piston, gland, mounting components, or other internal damage.

Bent Crane Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent hydraulic cylinder rod can create side loading, destroy new seals, damage the gland, score internal components, and contribute to repeated cylinder failure. Crane cylinders may be especially susceptible when the machine or attachment has experienced overload, impact, misalignment, or mounting-point wear.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house. We can machine the required diameters, threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, rod eyes, clevises, and other details required by the original cylinder design.

The replacement rod can then be installed as part of the complete cylinder rebuild rather than sending the rod to another supplier and waiting for a separate operation to be completed.

Cylinder Barrel Repair and Replacement

Cylinder barrels may become scored, worn, distorted, corroded, cracked, or otherwise damaged. Internal barrel damage can contribute to hydraulic bypassing, seal failure, heat generation, inconsistent movement, and loss of holding ability.

Iron Ax can inspect the barrel and determine whether the existing component is suitable for continued service or whether replacement is required. Our machine shop can manufacture replacement cylinder barrels when the original part is damaged or unavailable.

Gland and Piston Manufacturing

A crane cylinder rebuild may uncover a gland or piston that is worn, cracked, damaged, corroded, or no longer suitable for reuse. Replacement components may also be difficult to obtain for older, imported, or specialized crane cylinders.

Iron Ax manufactures hydraulic cylinder glands and pistons in-house. This capability allows us to address damaged internal components without depending entirely on OEM availability when a suitable replacement can be manufactured.

Clevises, Rod Eyes, Pins, and Cylinder Mounts

Hydraulic cylinders must remain properly aligned through their mounting pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, and equipment mounting points. Excessive wear or misalignment can place side loads on the cylinder and contribute to rod, gland, seal, and mounting damage.

Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities in addition to hydraulic cylinder repair. We can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, and related mounting components when they are part of the cylinder problem.

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

When a crane cylinder problem requires more than seals, Iron Ax has the machining and manufacturing capabilities to repair or replace damaged components in-house.

Large Crane Hydraulic Cylinders

Crane cylinders can be significantly larger and heavier than cylinders used on many types of mobile equipment. Iron Ax is equipped to handle small and large hydraulic cylinder repairs and has specialized handling capabilities for larger components.

Call before transporting a particularly large crane cylinder. Approximate length, bore size, rod diameter, weight, photographs, and crane information can help us prepare for unloading and determine the best way to handle the cylinder when it arrives.

Custom Replacement Crane Cylinders

Replacement crane cylinders may be expensive, backordered, obsolete, or unavailable for older or specialized equipment. In some cases, repairing the original cylinder may no longer be practical because of severe damage to the barrel, rod, mounts, or internal components.

Iron Ax can evaluate whether manufacturing a replacement hydraulic cylinder is practical using the existing cylinder, equipment information, mounting dimensions, bore and rod size, stroke, port information, drawings, and available specifications.

Crane applications may involve demanding load-holding, geometry, sequencing, or equipment-specific requirements, so each replacement-cylinder project must be evaluated individually before manufacturing begins.

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every crane cylinder failure requires the same repair. Some cylinders need seals and routine rebuilding. Others require a replacement rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, mount, pin, bushing, or other component.

When the original cylinder is badly damaged, obsolete, or difficult to replace, manufacturing a replacement may also deserve consideration. Iron Ax can inspect what you have, explain what we find, and determine which repair or replacement approach appears practical.

Bring the Crane Cylinder Problem to Iron Ax

Crane hydraulic cylinder repairs can involve much more than seal replacement. Damaged chrome rods, worn barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, mounts, pins, bushings, and obsolete components can all become part of the job.
