Custom Fabrication for Heavy Equipment

Iron Ax provides custom fabrication for heavy equipment, attachments, machinery, and industrial applications. Our in-house fabrication and machine shop capabilities allow us to build replacement components, brackets, mounts, frames, guards, linkage parts, attachments, structural assemblies, and other one-off equipment components when standard parts are unavailable or a custom solution is required.

Some fabrication projects begin with a drawing. Others begin with an old part, a damaged assembly, a photograph, a machine that needs to perform a different job, or simply a customer explaining what they need. Iron Ax can evaluate the application and determine whether the required component can be fabricated, machined, modified, repaired, or manufactured in-house.

Because welding, steel fabrication, machining, line boring, hydraulic cylinder work, and component manufacturing are available under one roof, we can handle projects that require several different capabilities instead of sending each portion of the job to a different shop.

Custom Heavy Equipment Components

Heavy equipment often includes brackets, mounts, linkage, supports, guards, clevises, frames, structural members, and other fabricated components that eventually become worn, bent, cracked, obsolete, or unavailable.

Iron Ax can fabricate replacement components using the original part, damaged assembly, drawings, measurements, photographs, equipment information, or available specifications. When the component also requires machining, bushings, pins, shafts, sleeves, or accurately located bores, those operations can be completed in our machine shop.

Some customers know exactly what part they need. Others simply bring us the problem. Iron Ax can help determine the most practical way to build or repair what the equipment requires.

Custom Heavy Equipment Attachments

Standard attachments do not fit every application. Equipment owners may need a rake, bracket, mount, adapter, guard, support, grapple component, lifting component, or other fabricated attachment designed around the equipment and the work being performed.

Iron Ax can fabricate custom attachment components and assemblies for excavators, loaders, skid steers, material handlers, forestry equipment, recycling equipment, and other heavy machinery. Projects may involve fabricated steel, machined pins, bushings, shafts, hydraulic cylinder mounts, or modifications to an existing attachment.

For custom projects, bring as much information as possible about the machine, attachment method, dimensions, required movement, intended use, loads, and operating environment so the project can be properly evaluated.

Replacement Brackets, Mounts, and Structural Components

Broken or unavailable brackets and mounts can make an otherwise usable machine or attachment difficult to repair. In some cases, the manufacturer sells only a larger assembly instead of the individual component that actually failed.

Iron Ax can fabricate replacement brackets, mounting plates, ears, supports, gussets, frames, crossmembers, clevises, cylinder mounts, and other structural components when the original part can be duplicated or the required geometry can be determined from the equipment.

Where required, fabricated components can also be machined for pins, bushings, shafts, bearings, threaded fasteners, or other mating parts.

Fabrication and Machining Under One Roof

Many heavy equipment components are not purely fabricated or purely machined. A replacement assembly may require structural steel fabrication along with precisely machined pins, bushings, shafts, bores, sleeves, spacers, clevises, or hydraulic components.

Iron Ax combines fabrication and machining capabilities under one roof. This allows the fabricated and machined portions of a project to be fitted together as one assembly rather than being produced independently by multiple suppliers.

Custom Pins, Bushings, Shafts, and Machined Components

Custom fabrication projects frequently require components that cannot be purchased from a shelf. Iron Ax can manufacture pins, bushings, shafts, sleeves, spacers, clevises, rod eyes, mounting components, and other machined parts needed to complete the fabricated assembly.

When a fabricated component includes multiple aligned pivot points, we can also evaluate whether the assembly requires bore machining or line boring after welding and fabrication are complete.

Hydraulic Components and Cylinder Mounts

Many heavy equipment attachments and fabricated assemblies depend on hydraulic cylinders for lifting, clamping, tilting, opening, closing, or positioning. That means cylinder mounting locations, clevises, pins, linkage, and surrounding structure must work together correctly.

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders and can manufacture cylinder mounts, rod eyes, clevises, pins, bushings, glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house.

When a custom fabrication project includes a hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic mounting system, those related components can be evaluated as part of the complete project.

Modify Existing Heavy Equipment and Attachments

Sometimes the existing equipment is usable but does not perform the job exactly as the owner needs. A customer may need different mounting points, additional reinforcement, a new bracket, modified linkage, a different attachment connection, protective guarding, or another fabricated change.

Iron Ax can evaluate modifications to existing heavy equipment components and attachments. The project may involve cutting, welding, new steel, machining, new pins or bushings, bore work, or replacement hydraulic components.

Not every requested modification is practical or appropriate. We evaluate the equipment and intended application before determining whether the project is a good fit for our capabilities.

Obsolete and Hard-to-Find Equipment Components

Older, imported, modified, or specialized equipment may use fabricated components that are no longer available. The original manufacturer may have discontinued the part, the dealer may have a long lead time, or the required piece may only be available as part of a much larger assembly.

Iron Ax can inspect the existing part, mating assembly, drawings, photographs, dimensions, and equipment information and determine whether the component can be repaired, duplicated, modified, or fabricated new.

For components that are discontinued, unavailable, backordered, or difficult to source, visit our Obsolete & Hard-to-Find Heavy Equipment Parts page.

When drawings are unavailable and the replacement must be developed from the existing component and mating assembly, Iron Ax also provides heavy equipment component reverse engineering .

Fabricating Components From an Existing Part

An old component is often the best starting point for a custom fabrication project. Even when the original part is worn, cracked, bent, or partially missing, it may provide valuable information about overall dimensions, mounting locations, material thickness, hole locations, reinforcement, and how the component interfaces with the machine.

The mating equipment can also help establish dimensions that may no longer be accurate on a badly worn part. For complex projects, bringing the complete assembly or related components can help us evaluate fit and alignment.

Fabricating From Drawings or Measurements

When drawings, sketches, dimensional information, or manufacturer specifications are available, they can provide the information needed to evaluate a custom fabrication project. Photographs of the equipment and surrounding assembly are also helpful in understanding how the component is installed and used.

For critical mounting locations, pivot points, hydraulic components, or complicated assemblies, additional measurements or mating components may be required before fabrication begins.
