Dump Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax provides dump truck hydraulic cylinder repair, rebuilding, repacking, machining, and replacement component manufacturing for dump trucks, dump trailers, construction fleets, aggregate haulers, paving contractors, municipalities, and other heavy-duty hydraulic applications.

Dump truck hydraulic cylinders operate under heavy loads and demanding conditions. A leaking, drifting, bent, damaged, or worn hoist cylinder can put a truck out of service and create costly downtime. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and determine whether the best solution is repacking, rebuilding, machining damaged components, or replacing parts of the cylinder.

Our hydraulic cylinder department is supported by an in-house machine shop, welding department, and fabrication facility. That allows Iron Ax to handle much more than a basic seal replacement when a dump truck cylinder has a damaged rod, barrel, gland, piston, mounting end, or other mechanical problem.

Dump Truck Hoist Cylinder Repair

The hydraulic hoist cylinder is responsible for raising the dump body so material can be unloaded. These cylinders routinely lift heavy loads and may operate in dirt, mud, gravel, asphalt, demolition debris, scrap, aggregate, and other demanding environments.

When a hoist cylinder begins leaking, drifting, losing lifting force, or operating improperly, the problem may involve seals, internal wear, damaged cylinder surfaces, bent components, worn mounting points, or another hydraulic or mechanical issue.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder to determine the condition of the internal components and identify what is required to return the cylinder to reliable service.

Telescopic Dump Truck Cylinder Repair

Many dump trucks and dump trailers use multi-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinders to provide the long stroke required to raise the dump body while keeping the retracted cylinder relatively compact.

Telescopic cylinders can develop hydraulic leaks, damaged sealing surfaces, worn stages, internal bypassing, corrosion, or mechanical damage. Because several stages must work together correctly, proper inspection is especially important before determining whether the cylinder should be repacked, rebuilt, or repaired more extensively.

Bring the complete cylinder to Iron Ax whenever possible. We can evaluate its condition and determine what repair work is practical.

Common Dump Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Problems

✓ Hydraulic oil leaking from the cylinder
✓ Dump body drifting downward
✓ Cylinder will not fully extend
✓ Cylinder will not fully retract
✓ Loss of lifting power
✓ Internal seal bypassing
✓ Bent or damaged cylinder rods
✓ Scratched or damaged cylinder surfaces
✓ Worn or damaged barrels
✓ Damaged glands or pistons
✓ Worn mounting eyes or clevises
✓ Damaged cylinder mounts
✓ Worn pins and bushings
✓ Corrosion and contamination
✓ Damaged threads or components
✓ Hard-to-find replacement parts

More Than a Dump Truck Cylinder Repack

A leaking dump truck cylinder does not always have a seal-only problem. Installing new seals without correcting mechanical damage can result in another failure and additional downtime.

Iron Ax inspects the cylinder components for wear and damage. Depending on the cylinder, a complete repair may involve seals, machining, rod replacement, barrel work, gland or piston repair, mounting-end repair, welding, or fabrication.

In-House Machining for Damaged Hydraulic Cylinders

One of the advantages of bringing a damaged dump truck cylinder to Iron Ax is our ability to perform hydraulic repair, machining, welding, and fabrication under one roof.

Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot cylinder repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque. Our full-service machine shop allows us to manufacture or repair many hydraulic cylinder components in-house.

Depending on the cylinder design and damage, Iron Ax can machine or manufacture components such as chrome rods, glands, pistons, barrels, pins, bushings, clevises, and mounting components.

Bent or Damaged Hydraulic Cylinder Rods

A bent, scratched, pitted, or damaged hydraulic cylinder rod can quickly destroy new seals and cause repeated leakage. Heavy loads, side loading, damaged mounts, impacts, contamination, and corrosion can all contribute to rod damage.

Iron Ax stocks chrome rod material and manufactures replacement hydraulic cylinder rods in-house for many applications. Our machine shop can reproduce threads, shoulders, grooves, rod ends, and other features required by the original cylinder.

Dump Truck Cylinder Mounting, Pins & Bushings

Hydraulic cylinder problems are sometimes accompanied by wear or damage at the mounting points. Pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, brackets, and bores can wear over time, especially on trucks operating under heavy loads and in abrasive environments.

Iron Ax’s machine shop and fabrication capabilities allow us to evaluate damaged mounting components and manufacture many replacement pins, bushings, and related components when needed.

Older and Hard-to-Find Dump Truck Cylinders

Older dump trucks can remain productive for many years, but replacement hydraulic cylinders and individual components may become difficult or expensive to obtain. An unavailable OEM part does not automatically mean the truck or cylinder is beyond repair.

Iron Ax can inspect the existing cylinder and determine whether damaged components can be repaired or manufactured. Our in-house machining and fabrication capabilities give us additional options when replacement parts are obsolete, backordered, or difficult to locate.

If rebuilding the original cylinder is not practical, we can also evaluate certain applications for Custom Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturing .

Dump Trucks, Dump Trailers & Heavy-Duty Applications

Iron Ax works with hydraulic cylinders from equipment used by construction companies, paving contractors, aggregate operations, demolition contractors, municipalities, truck fleets, recycling facilities, landscaping contractors, and other businesses that depend on hydraulic dump equipment.
