Excavator Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for excavators and other heavy construction equipment. We work on boom cylinders, stick cylinders, bucket cylinders, thumb cylinders, blade cylinders, and other hydraulic cylinders used on excavators of many sizes and brands.

Whether your excavator cylinder is leaking, drifting, losing power, bypassing internally, or has a bent rod, damaged barrel, worn gland, broken mount, or damaged piston, Iron Ax has the experience and in-house capabilities to evaluate the problem and provide a practical solution.

Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility and machine shop allow us to repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild existing cylinders, or manufacture a replacement cylinder when the original cannot be repaired economically.

Excavator Boom Cylinder Repair

Boom cylinders lift and support the excavator boom and are subjected to heavy loading, shock forces, contamination, side loading, and repeated cycling. A leaking or damaged boom cylinder can reduce lifting capacity, create unsafe movement, and take the machine out of service.

Iron Ax can inspect the boom cylinder, evaluate the chrome rod, barrel, piston, gland, seals, mounts, and related components, and determine whether the cylinder should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.

Stick and Arm Cylinder Repair

The stick or arm cylinder controls the movement of the excavator stick between the boom and bucket. These cylinders can suffer from bent rods, seal failure, damaged chrome, worn barrels, damaged mounts, and internal bypassing caused by heavy digging and side loading.

If a replacement rod, gland, piston, barrel, clevis, or other component is unavailable, our machine shop can manufacture the required part in-house as part of the repair.

Iron Ax manufactures custom replacement excavator pins for booms, sticks, buckets, linkage, attachments, and hydraulic cylinder mounting points.

Iron Ax also provides excavator boom, stick, bucket, attachment, and structural welding repairs when the damage extends beyond the hydraulic cylinder.

When an excavator project also requires a custom attachment, rake, bracket, mount, linkage component, or fabricated replacement part, Iron Ax provides custom fabrication for heavy equipment .

Bucket Cylinder Repair

Bucket cylinders experience high forces during digging, loading, demolition, land clearing, and material handling. A failed bucket cylinder may leak externally, lose holding power, move slowly, drift under load, or stop operating altogether.

Iron Ax repairs and rebuilds bucket cylinders and can replace bent rods, damaged barrels, worn glands, pistons, seals, mounts, and other damaged components.

Thumb and Blade Cylinder Repair

Excavator thumbs, dozer blades, stabilizers, and other attachments often use smaller hydraulic cylinders that are exposed to impact, debris, dirt, corrosion, and uneven loading. These cylinders can frequently be rebuilt, but a complete inspection is important because seal failure may be caused by rod, barrel, gland, or alignment damage.

Common Excavator Cylinder Problems

External hydraulic oil leaks
Cylinder drift under load
Bent or broken chrome rods
Scored or pitted rod surfaces
Worn or damaged barrels
Internal hydraulic bypassing
Broken clevises or mounts
Damaged glands and pistons
Seal failure and contamination
Cracked or damaged welds
Pin and bushing wear
Side-loading damage

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. When required, we can also accommodate larger cylinders using specialized handling and setup procedures.

Bent Excavator Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent excavator cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. A bent or damaged rod can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, create side loading, and cause another failure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the replacement rod as part of a complete cylinder rebuild.

Custom Replacement Excavator Cylinders

OEM excavator cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older or imported equipment. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.

Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete solution rather than sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.

Excavator Brands and Equipment

Iron Ax repairs hydraulic cylinders used on many excavator brands and equipment types. Availability of parts, dimensions, and original specifications varies by machine, but we can evaluate cylinders from Caterpillar, John Deere, Hitachi, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, Kobelco, Hyundai, Link-Belt, Doosan, Bobcat, Kubota, Takeuchi, JCB, and other manufacturers.

Brand names are used only to describe equipment applications. Iron Ax is an independent hydraulic cylinder repair and manufacturing company.

What to Bring or Tell Us

✓ The complete cylinder, if possible
✓ Excavator make and model
✓ Machine serial number
✓ Cylinder or equipment part number
✓ Photos of the cylinder and damage
✓ Description of the failure
✓ Operating pressure, if known
✓ Measurements or drawings, if available

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every excavator cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, or an obsolete cylinder, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.

Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.

Whether the cylinder needs repacking, rebuilding, rod replacement, machining, component manufacturing, or complete replacement, bring it to Iron Ax.
