Farm Implement Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax provides farm implement hydraulic cylinder repair, rebuilding, repacking, machining, and replacement component manufacturing for agricultural equipment used throughout Georgia and the surrounding Southeast.

We repair hydraulic cylinders from disc harrows, planters, seeders, hay equipment, rotary cutters, mowers, tillage equipment, sprayers, farm trailers, grain equipment, and many other hydraulic farm implements. Whether the cylinder has a simple seal leak or more extensive damage involving the rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, mounting end, or other components, Iron Ax can evaluate the complete cylinder.

Our hydraulic cylinder operation is supported by an in-house machine shop, welding department, and fabrication facility. That gives us the ability to do much more than replace seals when an older or damaged farm implement cylinder requires machining, welding, fabrication, or custom replacement parts.

Hydraulic Cylinder Repair for Farm Implements

Farm implements rely on hydraulic cylinders to lift, lower, fold, unfold, tilt, position, adjust, and control equipment. A single failed cylinder can prevent an otherwise functional implement from being used when it is needed most.

Agricultural cylinders also operate in demanding conditions. Dirt, dust, fertilizer, moisture, mud, crop residue, corrosion, shock loads, and years of outdoor storage can all contribute to hydraulic cylinder wear and failure.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the complete cylinder and determine whether it needs a routine repack or a more extensive rebuild involving machining, rod replacement, barrel work, welding, or replacement components.

Farm Equipment and Implements We Repair

Hydraulic cylinders are used throughout modern agricultural equipment. Iron Ax can evaluate cylinders from many types of farm machinery and implements, including:

Disc Harrows
Planters
Seeders
Hay Balers
Hay Rakes
Mowers & Rotary Cutters
Plows
Tillage Equipment
Sprayers
Farm Trailers
Grain Equipment
Other Hydraulic Implements

Disc Harrow Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Disc harrows and other tillage implements use hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower gangs, control working depth, fold transport sections, and position equipment. These cylinders are regularly exposed to dust, dirt, vibration, shock loads, and outdoor storage.

A leaking or drifting disc cylinder may allow the implement to lower unexpectedly or prevent it from maintaining the desired operating position. Iron Ax can inspect the seals, rod, barrel, gland, piston, mounts, and other components to determine the cause of the problem.

Planter and Seeder Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Planters and seeders may use multiple hydraulic cylinders for lifting, folding, markers, row-unit positioning, transport systems, and other functions. During planting season, even a relatively small hydraulic problem can create significant downtime.

If a planter cylinder is leaking, drifting, damaged, or will not operate correctly, bring the cylinder to Iron Ax. We can determine whether it needs seals, machining, rod replacement, barrel work, or another repair.

Hay Equipment Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Hay balers, hay rakes, mower-conditioners, cutters, and other hay equipment may use hydraulic cylinders for lifting, folding, opening, closing, positioning, and controlling different machine functions.

Hay season often leaves little room for equipment downtime. Iron Ax can inspect damaged or leaking hydraulic cylinders and determine the most practical way to return the cylinder to service.

Common Farm Implement Hydraulic Cylinder Problems

✓ Hydraulic oil leaking around the rod
✓ Implement drifting or lowering
✓ Cylinder will not hold position
✓ Loss of lifting force
✓ Internal hydraulic bypassing
✓ Failed or worn seals
✓ Bent hydraulic cylinder rods
✓ Pitted or scratched chrome rods
✓ Scored or damaged barrels
✓ Worn glands and pistons
✓ Broken rod eyes or clevises
✓ Damaged mounting ends
✓ Worn pins and bushings
✓ Corrosion from outdoor storage
✓ Damaged threads
✓ Obsolete or unavailable components

Bent or Damaged Farm Implement Cylinder Rods

Hydraulic cylinder rods on farm implements can become bent from overloads, impacts, side loading, damaged mounting points, or equipment accidents. Chrome surfaces may also become scratched, pitted, rusted, or damaged from years of outdoor exposure.

A damaged rod can quickly destroy new seals and cause a freshly repacked cylinder to begin leaking again. When the rod cannot be reused, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement.

Iron Ax stocks chrome rod material, and our machine shop can reproduce threads, shoulders, grooves, rod eyes, and other features needed for many hydraulic cylinder applications.

More Than a Farm Implement Cylinder Repack

Many agricultural hydraulic cylinder problems begin with a leaking seal, but not every leaking cylinder can be repaired properly by simply installing a new seal kit.

If the chrome rod is damaged, the barrel is scored, the gland is worn, the piston is damaged, or the mounting components are failing, replacing seals alone may result in another failure.

Iron Ax inspects the complete cylinder and can perform the machining, welding, fabrication, and component manufacturing needed for more extensive repairs.

In-House Machining for Agricultural Hydraulic Cylinders

One of the biggest advantages of bringing a farm implement cylinder to Iron Ax is our ability to perform hydraulic repair, machining, welding, and fabrication under one roof.

Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot cylinder repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of producing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque. Our full-service machine shop allows us to manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, barrels, pins, bushings, and other components in-house.

This capability is particularly valuable for older farm implements where the cylinder itself may still be repairable even though replacement parts are difficult to obtain.

Older and Hard-to-Find Farm Implement Cylinders

Farmers often keep implements in service for many years. A disc, planter, mower, baler, or other piece of equipment may still perform its job well even though the manufacturer no longer offers the original hydraulic cylinder or internal components.

Before replacing an entire piece of equipment because a cylinder is difficult to find, bring the original cylinder to Iron Ax. We can determine whether it can be rebuilt and whether damaged components can be repaired or manufactured.

If rebuilding the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can also evaluate certain applications for Custom Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturing .

Hydraulic Hoses for Farm Implements

Farm implements also rely on hydraulic hoses to connect cylinders to the tractor or hydraulic power source. These hoses are exposed to flexing, abrasion, sunlight, dirt, weather, and physical damage.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement hydraulic hose assemblies for tractors, farm implements, construction equipment, and other hydraulic machinery. If you are bringing us a cylinder and also have a damaged hose from the same equipment, bring the hose with you.
