Forestry Equipment Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for forestry, logging, land-clearing, and wood-processing equipment. We work on hydraulic cylinders used on log loaders, knucklebooms, grapples, feller bunchers, skidders, forwarders, delimbers, chippers, grinders, mulchers, tree shears, and other equipment operating in demanding forestry applications.

Forestry equipment operates in some of the toughest conditions hydraulic cylinders encounter. Heavy loads, shock forces, contamination, side loading, impact, and continuous operation can damage rods, barrels, glands, pistons, seals, mounts, pins, bushings, and other components.

Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, machine shop, and fabrication capabilities allow Iron Ax to handle more than routine seal replacement. We can repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Log Loader and Knuckleboom Cylinder Repair

Log loaders and knucklebooms depend on hydraulic cylinders to lift, position, and control heavy timber throughout the loading and handling process. Boom, stick, grapple, stabilizer, and other cylinders may operate through thousands of cycles while being exposed to shock loading, dirt, debris, weather, and demanding working conditions.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder, evaluate the chrome rod, barrel, piston, gland, seals, mounts, and related components, and determine whether the cylinder should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.

Skidder Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Skidders rely on hydraulic cylinders for steering, grapples, blades, arches, and other functions. These cylinders operate in rough terrain where impact, contamination, worn pins and bushings, side loading, and heavy loads can contribute to premature cylinder failure.

If a skidder cylinder is leaking, drifting, losing power, or has a damaged rod, barrel, mount, gland, or piston, Iron Ax can evaluate the complete cylinder and determine the appropriate repair.

Feller Buncher and Delimber Cylinder Repair

Feller bunchers, delimbers, processors, and other timber-harvesting equipment use hydraulic cylinders for boom movement, leveling, positioning, clamping, feeding, and attachment functions. High cycle counts and severe operating conditions can result in worn seals, damaged chrome rods, internal bypassing, barrel damage, and mounting failures.

Iron Ax can repair and rebuild these cylinders and manufacture replacement rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, mounts, pins, bushings, and other components when required.

Grapple and Attachment Cylinder Repair

Grapples, tree shears, mulchers, rakes, and other forestry attachments often use hydraulic cylinders that are directly exposed to impact, dirt, wood debris, moisture, and uneven loading. Damaged attachment cylinders can prevent the equipment from gripping, cutting, positioning, or releasing material correctly.

Iron Ax can repair forestry attachment cylinders and address related damaged components when necessary. With hydraulic repair, machining, welding, and fabrication capabilities under one roof, we can often solve problems that involve more than simply replacing seals.

Common Forestry Equipment Cylinder Problems

External hydraulic oil leaks
Boom or attachment drift
Reduced lifting or gripping force
Bent or broken chrome rods
Scored or pitted rod surfaces
Worn or damaged barrels
Internal hydraulic bypassing
Broken clevises or mounts
Damaged glands and pistons
Seal failure and contamination
Worn pins and bushings
Side-loading and impact damage

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

Bent Forestry Equipment Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent or damaged forestry equipment cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. A damaged rod can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, cause side loading, create internal wear, and lead to another failure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the new rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.

Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Cylinder Mounts

Forestry cylinder failures are not always limited to the cylinder itself. Worn pins and bushings, damaged clevises, elongated mounting holes, broken mounts, and misaligned linkage can place excessive side load on the cylinder and contribute to rod, gland, seal, and barrel damage.

Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounts, and related components when they are part of the problem.

Custom Replacement Forestry Equipment Cylinders

OEM forestry equipment cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older, imported, modified, or specialized equipment. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.

Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete hydraulic cylinder solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.

Forestry Equipment Brands

Iron Ax can evaluate hydraulic cylinders used on many brands of forestry and logging equipment, including John Deere, Tigercat, Caterpillar, Komatsu, TimberPro, Barko, Prentice, Link-Belt, Sennebogen, Volvo, Bandit, Morbark, Vermeer, and other manufacturers. Cylinder designs and parts availability vary by machine, but our in-house repair and manufacturing capabilities allow us to evaluate a wide range of forestry equipment applications.

Brand names are used only to describe equipment applications. Iron Ax is an independent hydraulic cylinder repair and manufacturing company.

What to Bring or Tell Us

✓ The complete cylinder, if possible
✓ Equipment make and model
✓ Machine serial number
✓ Cylinder or equipment part number
✓ Photos of the cylinder and damage
✓ Description of the failure
✓ Operating pressure, if known
✓ Measurements or drawings, if available

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every forestry equipment cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long OEM lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.

Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
