Garbage Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders used on garbage trucks, refuse trucks, waste collection vehicles, recycling trucks, front loaders, rear loaders, side loaders, and other commercial waste-handling equipment.
Refuse equipment depends on hydraulic cylinders to compact material, operate packer and ejector assemblies, open and close tailgates, raise containers, operate lift arms, and control other waste-handling functions. These cylinders work through frequent cycles in demanding environments where contamination, heavy loads, impact, and equipment downtime are everyday concerns.
Iron Ax combines hydraulic cylinder repair with in-house machining, chrome rod manufacturing, cylinder barrel manufacturing, welding, fabrication, and custom component manufacturing. When a garbage truck cylinder needs more than another seal kit, we have the capabilities to evaluate and repair the complete cylinder.

Garbage Truck Packer Cylinder Repair
Packer and compaction systems repeatedly move heavy refuse through the body of the truck. The hydraulic cylinders operating these systems may cycle throughout the workday while exposed to dirt, moisture, debris, impact, and substantial hydraulic loads.
External leakage, internal bypassing, worn seals, bent rods, damaged barrels, worn glands, damaged pistons, or mounting problems can reduce compaction performance and eventually take the truck out of service.
Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the packer cylinder, evaluate the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, clevises, and mounting components, and determine whether the cylinder requires repacking, rebuilding, machining, or replacement parts.
Ejector Cylinder Repair
Some refuse bodies use hydraulic ejector systems to move collected material toward the rear of the body during unloading. Ejector cylinders may be long, heavily loaded, and exposed to repeated cycling as the truck is emptied.
A leaking or internally bypassing ejector cylinder may move slowly, fail to develop the required force, or have difficulty maintaining position. Rod damage, barrel wear, contamination, mounting misalignment, and worn internal components can also contribute to failure.
Iron Ax can evaluate the complete ejector cylinder and determine whether it requires seal replacement, rod repair or replacement, barrel work, machining, or a more extensive rebuild.
Tailgate Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Hydraulic tailgate cylinders open, close, raise, lower, or secure the rear section of many refuse bodies. These cylinders must operate consistently while exposed to weather, road debris, waste material, and repeated movement.
Leaks, internal bypassing, damaged rods, worn mounting pins, broken clevises, or cylinder drift can interfere with proper tailgate operation. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and its mounting components and repair or manufacture damaged parts when practical.
Front Loader Lift-Arm Cylinder Repair
Front-loading garbage trucks use hydraulic lift arms to raise commercial containers and empty them into the refuse body. The cylinders operating these arms experience repeated lifting cycles and changing loads throughout the collection route.
Bent rods, leaking seals, worn barrels, damaged clevises, loose mounting pins, and internal bypassing can affect lifting power and container control. Iron Ax can rebuild these cylinders and manufacture replacement rods, barrels, glands, pistons, pins, bushings, and related components when required.
Side Loader and Cart-Lift Cylinder Repair
Automated and semi-automated side loaders may use hydraulic cylinders throughout the collection arm, grabber, lift mechanism, cart tipper, and related linkage. Frequent stop-and-go collection cycles can place considerable wear on cylinders and mounting components.
Iron Ax can repair individual hydraulic cylinders from these systems and evaluate damaged rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, bushings, and mounting components.
Bent Garbage Truck Cylinder Rod Replacement
A bent hydraulic cylinder rod can damage seals, wear the gland, create side loading, score internal components, and contribute to repeated cylinder failure. Refuse equipment may experience rod damage from overload, impact, misalignment, worn mounting points, or excessive movement in the packer, lift, tailgate, or ejector assembly.
Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house. We can machine the required diameter, threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, cross holes, rod eyes, clevises, and other details required by the original cylinder design.
Manufacturing the rod in our own machine shop allows the replacement component to become part of the complete cylinder rebuild rather than depending entirely on OEM rod availability.
Cylinder Barrel Repair and Replacement
Refuse truck cylinders operate in dirty and demanding environments. Cylinder barrels may become scored, worn, corroded, distorted, or otherwise damaged through normal wear, contamination, mechanical damage, or internal component failure.
Internal barrel damage can contribute to hydraulic bypassing, premature seal wear, reduced cylinder force, or repeated leakage. Iron Ax can inspect the barrel and determine whether it is suitable for reuse or whether replacement is required.
When practical, our machine shop can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder barrel in-house.
Gland and Piston Manufacturing
A garbage truck cylinder that initially appears to need only seals may contain additional damage. The gland may be worn or cracked, the piston may be damaged, threads may be worn, or internal wear surfaces may no longer be suitable for reuse.
Iron Ax manufactures hydraulic cylinder glands and pistons in-house when replacement manufacturing is appropriate. This provides additional repair options when an OEM internal component is damaged, obsolete, expensive, or unavailable.
Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Cylinder Mounts
Hydraulic cylinders depend on properly fitted and aligned mounting components. Worn pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounting ears, or equipment-side bores can allow excessive movement and place side loads on the cylinder.
That movement may contribute to bent rods, gland wear, seal failure, damaged rod eyes, cracked mounts, and repeated cylinder problems.
Iron Ax can manufacture replacement pins and bushings and can evaluate damaged clevises, rod eyes, mounts, bores, and structural components when the repair extends beyond the hydraulic cylinder itself.
If a garbage truck cylinder keeps failing, the cause may be worn mounting components or equipment-side misalignment—not only the seals inside the cylinder.
Common Garbage Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Problems
Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities
Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.
When a refuse truck cylinder requires more than seals, Iron Ax can manufacture many of the damaged cylinder components in-house.
Large Garbage Truck Hydraulic Cylinders
Packer, ejector, lift-arm, and other refuse equipment cylinders can be long, heavy, and more difficult to handle than ordinary hydraulic cylinders. Iron Ax is equipped for small and large hydraulic cylinder repair and has specialized handling capabilities for larger components.
For an unusually long or heavy cylinder, call before transporting it. Approximate length, rod diameter, bore size, weight, photographs, and refuse-body information can help us prepare for unloading and determine the best setup for the repair.
Obsolete and Hard-to-Find Garbage Truck Cylinders
Older refuse bodies and discontinued waste-handling equipment may use hydraulic cylinders or internal components that are expensive, backordered, obsolete, or difficult to obtain.
Iron Ax can evaluate the original cylinder to determine whether it can be repaired using newly manufactured rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, or other components rather than replacing the entire cylinder.
When the existing cylinder is too badly damaged or a practical replacement is unavailable, we can also evaluate whether manufacturing a custom replacement hydraulic cylinder is appropriate.
Custom Replacement Garbage Truck Cylinders
A complete replacement hydraulic cylinder may be difficult to source for older, modified, imported, or specialized refuse equipment. In these situations, Iron Ax can evaluate the existing cylinder and equipment application to determine whether manufacturing a replacement is practical.
Useful information may include bore size, rod diameter, stroke, retracted and extended lengths, mounting dimensions, pin sizes, port locations, operating pressure, drawings, part numbers, and the original cylinder itself.
Because packer, ejector, lift, and tailgate cylinders operate as part of heavily loaded equipment systems, every custom replacement project must be evaluated individually before manufacturing begins.
Garbage Truck and Refuse Equipment Applications
Our Garbage Truck Cylinder Repair Process
1. Inspect the Cylinder
We review the reported failure and inspect the cylinder externally for leakage, rod damage, barrel damage, mounting wear, and other visible problems.
2. Disassemble and Evaluate
The rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, threads, wear surfaces, clevises, and internal components are inspected.
3. Determine the Repair
We determine whether the cylinder requires seals, machining, rod replacement, barrel work, new internal components, or a more extensive rebuild.
4. Manufacture Components
Chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, bushings, and other components can be manufactured when required and practical.
5. Reassemble the Cylinder
The repaired components and new seals are installed and the cylinder is carefully reassembled.
6. Test the Repair
The completed hydraulic cylinder is tested as appropriate before being returned to the customer.
What to Bring or Tell Us
You May Not Need to Bring the Entire Truck
For many garbage truck hydraulic cylinder repairs, the individual cylinder can be removed and brought to Iron Ax rather than transporting the complete refuse truck.
If the problem may involve mounting points, pins, bushings, clevises, packer linkage, lift arms, tailgate structure, or other equipment components, send photographs of the truck and damaged area. We can help determine whether additional components should also be brought with the cylinder.
Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture a Replacement?
Some garbage truck cylinders require only routine seal replacement. Others may need a new chrome rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, rod eye, pin, bushing, or other component before they can be returned to service.
When the cylinder is badly damaged or an OEM replacement is obsolete, unavailable, backordered, or impractical, manufacturing a replacement cylinder may also be considered. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and determine which approach appears practical.
Bring the Garbage Truck Cylinder Problem to Iron Ax
A refuse truck cylinder problem can involve much more than a leaking seal. Bent rods, worn barrels, damaged glands, broken clevises, worn mounting pins and bushings, damaged mounts, contamination, or obsolete components may all become part of the repair.
Iron Ax has hydraulic cylinder repair, machining, fabrication, component manufacturing, pin and bushing manufacturing, and custom cylinder capabilities under one roof. Bring us the cylinder and let us evaluate the complete problem.
