Grapple Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for grapples used on forestry equipment, log loaders, excavators, material handlers, skid steers, recycling equipment, scrap handlers, and other heavy equipment. We work on grapple open-and-close cylinders, clamp cylinders, attachment cylinders, and related hydraulic components used in demanding material-handling applications.

Grapple cylinders are exposed to impact, dirt, debris, moisture, side loading, repeated cycling, and heavy gripping forces. These conditions can damage chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, seals, mounts, clevises, pins, bushings, and other components.

Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, machine shop, and fabrication capabilities allow Iron Ax to handle more than routine seal replacement. We can repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Forestry and Log Loader Grapple Cylinder Repair

Forestry and log loader grapples depend on hydraulic cylinders to open, close, clamp, hold, and release timber throughout loading and handling operations. These cylinders operate in rough environments where wood debris, dirt, impact, moisture, shock loading, and repeated cycling can contribute to premature wear and failure.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the complete grapple cylinder, evaluate the chrome rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, mounts, pins, bushings, and related components, and determine whether the cylinder should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.

Excavator Grapple Cylinder Repair

Excavator grapples are used for demolition, land clearing, tree work, debris handling, scrap handling, and material sorting. Grapple cylinders may be exposed to side loading, impact, contamination, and irregular loads that can bend rods, damage seals, wear barrels, crack mounts, or create internal bypassing.

If the grapple will not hold material, opens or closes slowly, drifts under load, leaks hydraulic oil, or lacks normal gripping force, Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and determine the correct repair.

Material Handler and Scrap Grapple Cylinder Repair

Material handlers and scrap-handling equipment use grapples to move scrap metal, demolition debris, logs, bulky material, and other heavy loads. Grapple cylinders in these applications can operate through frequent cycles while being exposed to shock, contamination, metal debris, twisting forces, and impact.

Iron Ax understands heavy-duty material-handling and recycling equipment. In addition to repairing the hydraulic cylinder, our machining and fabrication capabilities allow us to evaluate related damaged pins, bushings, mounts, clevises, and attachment components when they contribute to the problem.

Skid Steer Grapple Cylinder Repair

Skid steer grapple buckets, root grapples, brush grapples, log grapples, and other attachments use hydraulic cylinders to clamp and release material. These cylinders are often directly exposed to dirt, brush, roots, rock, demolition debris, and impact.

Iron Ax can repair skid steer grapple cylinders and manufacture replacement rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, bushings, and other components when standard replacement parts are unavailable or the damage extends beyond the seals.

Common Grapple Cylinder Problems

External hydraulic oil leaks
Weak gripping or clamping force
Grapple drifting open
Slow opening or closing
Bent or broken chrome rods
Scored or pitted rod surfaces
Worn or damaged barrels
Internal hydraulic bypassing
Broken clevises or mounts
Damaged glands and pistons
Worn pins and bushings
Side-loading and impact damage

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

Bent Grapple Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent or damaged grapple cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. A bent rod or damaged chrome surface can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, create side loading, and cause another failure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the replacement rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.

Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Grapple Mounts

Grapple cylinder problems are not always limited to the cylinder. Worn pins and bushings, damaged clevises, elongated holes, broken mounts, and misaligned linkage can place excessive side load on the cylinder rod and contribute to repeated seal, gland, rod, and barrel damage.

Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounts, and related attachment components when they are part of the problem.

Iron Ax can also fabricate grapple mounts, brackets, linkage, attachment components, and other custom heavy equipment components when the repair extends beyond the hydraulic cylinder.

Custom Replacement Grapple Cylinders

Replacement grapple cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older, imported, modified, or custom attachments. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.

Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete hydraulic cylinder solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every grapple cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long replacement lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.

Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
