Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Hydraulic cylinder problems can cause oil leaks, reduced lifting power, unwanted movement, slow operation, pressure loss, and equipment downtime. Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder, identify damaged or worn components, and explain whether the best solution is repacking, rebuilding, component replacement, or manufacturing a new cylinder.
Our repair work supports cylinders used on wheel loaders, excavators, skidsteers, bulldozers, backhoes, forestry equipment, log loaders, cranes, garbage trucks and refuse equipment, balers and industrial compaction equipment, roll-off trucks and hooklift trucks, compactors, telehandlers, grapples, material handlers, mobile shears, agricultural equipment, tractors, farm implements, dump trucks, industrial machinery, trucks, trailers, municipal equipment, and many other hydraulic applications.
Hydraulic Cylinder Repacking
A cylinder may need repacking when seals have worn, hardened, torn, or failed. Symptoms can include external oil leakage, internal bypassing, cylinder drift, loss of force, or inconsistent movement. Repacking normally includes disassembly, inspection, replacement of the appropriate seals, reassembly, and testing.
A seal replacement alone may not solve the problem if the chrome rod is damaged, the barrel is worn, the gland is scored, or other internal components have failed. Iron Ax inspects the complete cylinder so the underlying cause can be addressed rather than simply replacing seals and returning a cylinder that may fail again.
Complete Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuilding
A complete rebuild may involve new seals, rod replacement, barrel replacement or repair, gland and piston work, mounting-end repair, welding, machining, and pressure testing. Our fabrication and machine-shop capabilities allow us to manufacture many damaged or unavailable cylinder components in-house.
Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque. Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. When required, we can also accommodate larger cylinders using specialized handling and setup procedures.
Repair or Replace?
Not every damaged cylinder should be repaired. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and help determine whether rebuilding the existing cylinder or manufacturing a replacement makes the most practical sense. The decision can depend on the extent of damage, availability of replacement parts, equipment downtime, original cylinder quality, and the cost of a new OEM cylinder.
