Log Loader Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for log loaders, knuckleboom loaders, trailer-mounted loaders, stationary loaders, and other timber-handling equipment. We work on boom cylinders, stick cylinders, grapple cylinders, stabilizer cylinders, heel cylinders, outrigger cylinders, and other hydraulic cylinders used in demanding logging and forestry applications.

Log loaders operate under heavy loads, repeated cycling, shock forces, dirt, wood debris, weather, and uneven loading. These conditions can damage chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, seals, clevises, mounts, pins, bushings, and other hydraulic components.

Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, machine shop, and fabrication capabilities allow Iron Ax to handle more than routine seal replacement. We can repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Log Loader Boom Cylinder Repair

Boom cylinders raise, lower, and support the loader boom while logs are being picked up, positioned, stacked, and loaded. These cylinders are subjected to heavy loads, constant cycling, shock forces, dirt, debris, and changing load angles throughout normal forestry operations.

A leaking or damaged boom cylinder can reduce lifting capacity, allow the boom to drift, create unsafe movement, and take the loader out of service. Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the complete cylinder and determine whether it should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.

Stick and Knuckle Cylinder Repair

Stick and knuckle cylinders control the second section of the loader boom and allow the operator to reach, position, and move timber accurately. These cylinders may experience bent rods, seal failure, damaged chrome, worn barrels, broken mounts, and internal bypassing caused by heavy loading and repeated articulation.

Iron Ax can inspect the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, mounts, clevises, and related components and manufacture replacement parts in-house when standard parts are damaged, obsolete, or unavailable.

Log Loader Grapple Cylinder Repair

Grapple cylinders open and close the grapple around logs and other material. They are exposed directly to dirt, wood debris, impact, weather, side loading, and frequent cycling. A leaking or weak grapple cylinder can reduce gripping force and make it difficult to safely handle timber.

Iron Ax can repair and rebuild grapple cylinders and address damaged rods, barrels, glands, pistons, seals, mounts, pins, bushings, and other related components.

Stabilizer and Outrigger Cylinder Repair

Truck-mounted and trailer-mounted log loaders often use hydraulic stabilizer or outrigger cylinders to support and level the machine during loading operations. These cylinders carry significant loads and must hold position reliably while the loader is operating.

If a stabilizer cylinder leaks, drifts, settles under load, or has a damaged rod, barrel, mount, or internal component, Iron Ax can evaluate the cylinder and determine the correct repair.

Common Log Loader Cylinder Problems

External hydraulic oil leaks
Boom or grapple drift
Reduced lifting or gripping force
Bent or broken chrome rods
Scored or pitted rod surfaces
Worn or damaged barrels
Internal hydraulic bypassing
Broken clevises or mounts
Damaged glands and pistons
Seal failure and contamination
Worn pins and bushings
Side-loading and impact damage

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

Bent Log Loader Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent or damaged log loader cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. Damaged chrome or a bent rod can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, create side loading, and cause another failure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the replacement rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.

Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Cylinder Mounts

Log loader cylinder problems are not always limited to the cylinder itself. Worn pins and bushings, damaged clevises, broken mounts, elongated holes, and misaligned linkage can place excessive side load on a cylinder and contribute to rod, gland, seal, and barrel damage.

Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the hydraulic cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounts, and related components when they are part of the problem.

Custom Replacement Log Loader Cylinders

OEM log loader cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older, imported, modified, or specialized equipment. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.

Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete hydraulic cylinder solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.

Log Loader Brands and Equipment

Iron Ax can evaluate hydraulic cylinders used on many brands and types of log loaders and timber-handling equipment, including Barko, Prentice, John Deere, Tigercat, Caterpillar, Link-Belt, Sennebogen, TimberPro, Komatsu, Volvo, Serco, Rotobec-equipped machines, and other manufacturers and configurations.

Brand names are used only to describe equipment applications. Iron Ax is an independent hydraulic cylinder repair and manufacturing company.

What to Bring or Tell Us

✓ The complete cylinder, if possible
✓ Log loader make and model
✓ Machine serial number
✓ Cylinder or equipment part number
✓ Photos of the cylinder and damage
✓ Description of the failure
✓ Operating pressure, if known
✓ Measurements or drawings, if available

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every log loader cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long OEM lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.

Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
