Material Handler Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for material handlers used in scrap yards, recycling facilities, ports, mills, demolition operations, industrial plants, forestry applications, and other heavy material-handling environments. We work on boom cylinders, stick cylinders, grapple cylinders, cab-rise cylinders, stabilizer cylinders, and other hydraulic cylinders used on material handling equipment.

Material handlers operate under heavy loads, repeated cycling, side loading, shock forces, contamination, and demanding working conditions. These conditions can damage chrome rods, cylinder barrels, glands, pistons, seals, mounts, clevises, pins, bushings, and other hydraulic components.

Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, machine shop, and fabrication capabilities allow Iron Ax to handle more than routine seal replacement. We can repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Material Handler Boom Cylinder Repair

Boom cylinders provide the lifting force needed to raise and position the boom while handling scrap, demolition debris, logs, bulk material, and other heavy loads. These cylinders operate through frequent cycles and are subjected to heavy loading, shock forces, contamination, and changing load angles.

A leaking or damaged boom cylinder can reduce lifting capacity, cause boom drift, create unsafe movement, and take the machine out of service. Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the complete cylinder and determine whether it should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.

Stick and Arm Cylinder Repair

Stick or arm cylinders control the reach and positioning of the material handler boom. These cylinders can suffer from bent rods, seal failure, damaged chrome, worn barrels, broken mounts, and internal bypassing caused by heavy material handling and repeated articulation.

Iron Ax can inspect the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, mounts, clevises, and related components and manufacture replacement parts in-house when standard parts are damaged, obsolete, backordered, or unavailable.

Material Handler Grapple Cylinder Repair

Material handlers often use hydraulic grapples to move scrap metal, logs, demolition debris, bulky material, and other heavy loads. Grapple cylinders can operate through constant cycles while being exposed to impact, twisting forces, contamination, metal debris, dirt, and weather.

If a grapple is opening slowly, losing gripping force, drifting under load, or leaking hydraulic oil, Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder and related components and determine the most practical repair.

Cab-Rise Cylinder Repair

Many material handlers use hydraulic cab-rise systems to elevate the operator for improved visibility while loading trucks, railcars, containers, or processing equipment. A leaking or drifting cab-rise cylinder can interfere with safe operation and create excessive movement while the cab is elevated.

Iron Ax can inspect and rebuild cab-rise cylinders and repair or manufacture damaged rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components when required.

Stabilizer and Outrigger Cylinder Repair

Some material handlers use stabilizer or outrigger cylinders to improve machine stability during lifting and loading operations. These cylinders must reliably support heavy loads and hold position during operation.

If a stabilizer or outrigger cylinder leaks, settles, drifts, or has damaged mounting components, Iron Ax can evaluate the complete cylinder and determine whether it requires repacking, rebuilding, component replacement, or complete replacement.

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

Bent Material Handler Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent or damaged material handler cylinder rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service. A bent rod or damaged chrome surface can quickly destroy new seals, damage the gland, create side loading, and lead to another failure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the replacement rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.

Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Cylinder Mounts

Material handler cylinder failures are not always limited to the cylinder itself. Worn pins and bushings, damaged clevises, elongated mounting holes, broken mounts, and misaligned linkage can place excessive side load on the cylinder and contribute to rod, gland, seal, and barrel damage.

When a material handler repair involves structural damage, worn bores, boom or attachment components, custom pins, bushings, welding, fabrication, or machining, learn more about our complete heavy equipment repair capabilities .

Iron Ax also provides line boring and bore repair for worn material handler booms, attachments, linkage, and cylinder mounting points.

For worn material handler boom, attachment, grapple, linkage, and cylinder-mount components, Iron Ax also provides custom pin and bushing manufacturing.

When material handler damage also involves boom structure, attachment components, cracked mounts, failed welds, or damaged steel, Iron Ax provides heavy equipment structural repair and welding.

For material handler projects requiring custom brackets, boom or attachment components, hydraulic mounts, fabricated assemblies, or equipment modifications, learn more about our Custom Fabrication for Heavy Equipment capabilities.

Iron Ax has machining and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounts, and related components when they are part of the problem.

Custom Replacement Material Handler Cylinders

OEM material handler cylinders may be expensive, backordered, discontinued, or unavailable for older, imported, modified, or specialized machines. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.

Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete hydraulic cylinder solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.

Material Handler Brands and Equipment

Iron Ax can evaluate hydraulic cylinders used on many brands and types of material handling equipment, including Sennebogen, Liebherr, Caterpillar, Fuchs, Komatsu, Volvo, Link-Belt, Doosan, Develon, Hitachi, John Deere, and other manufacturers. Cylinder designs and parts availability vary by machine, but our in-house repair and manufacturing capabilities allow us to evaluate a wide range of material handler applications.

Brand names are used only to describe equipment applications. Iron Ax is an independent hydraulic cylinder repair and manufacturing company.

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?

Not every material handler cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long OEM lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.

Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
