Mobile Shear Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders for mobile shears used in scrap processing, demolition, recycling, metal processing, and heavy material-handling applications. We work on main shear cylinders, rotation-related cylinders, attachment cylinders, and other hydraulic cylinders used on excavator-mounted and material-handler-mounted shears.
Mobile shear cylinders operate under extreme force, shock loading, contamination, repeated cycling, impact, and demanding working conditions. These conditions can damage chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, seals, clevises, mounts, pins, bushings, and other hydraulic components.
Our full-service hydraulic cylinder facility, machine shop, fabrication shop, and heavy equipment manufacturing experience allow Iron Ax to handle more than routine seal replacement. We can repair damaged components, manufacture replacement parts, rebuild the existing cylinder, or manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder when repairing the original is not practical.

Main Mobile Shear Cylinder Repair
The main hydraulic cylinder provides the force required to open and close the shear jaws and cut heavy steel, structural material, plate, pipe, demolition debris, and other scrap. These cylinders operate under very high loads and repeated shock forces, making them especially vulnerable to seal failure, rod damage, barrel wear, mounting damage, and internal bypassing.
Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the complete shear cylinder, evaluate the chrome rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, clevises, mounts, and related components, and determine whether the cylinder should be repacked, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced.
Mobile Shear Cylinder Rod Replacement
Mobile shear cylinder rods can be damaged by side loading, shock forces, bent attachment geometry, worn pins and bushings, impact, or extreme operating conditions. A bent or damaged rod should not simply be resealed and returned to service.
Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house and can machine the required threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, clevises, rod eyes, and mounting details. We can then install the new rod as part of a complete hydraulic cylinder rebuild.
Cylinder Barrel, Gland, and Piston Repair
Shear cylinders can develop internal damage from contamination, heavy loading, piston wear, damaged seals, rod misalignment, and repeated cycling. A worn or damaged barrel can cause internal bypassing, loss of force, heat generation, and repeated seal failure.
Our in-house machine shop can manufacture cylinder barrels, glands, pistons, rods, and related components when the original parts are damaged, unavailable, obsolete, or not practical to repair.
Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Mounting Problems
A mobile shear cylinder failure may be caused or accelerated by worn pins and bushings, damaged clevises, elongated holes, broken mounts, or misalignment in the attachment. Excessive movement can side-load the cylinder rod, damage seals, wear the gland, bend the rod, and shorten the life of the repair.
Iron Ax has machining, welding, and fabrication capabilities under one roof. In addition to rebuilding the cylinder, we can evaluate and manufacture damaged pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounts, and related attachment components when they are part of the problem.
When a mobile shear problem also involves attachment structure, worn bores, pins, bushings, clevises, mounts, welding, fabrication, or machining, visit our Heavy Equipment Repair, Fabrication & Machining page.
When mobile shear pins and bushings have damaged attachment, clevis, or mounting bores, Iron Ax can provide heavy equipment line boring and bore repair.
Iron Ax also manufactures mobile shear and heavy equipment pins and bushings for attachment, clevis, linkage, and cylinder mounting applications.
If the mobile shear problem also involves cracked attachment structure, broken mounts, failed welds, damaged clevises, or worn steel, visit our Heavy Equipment Structural Repair & Welding page.
When a mobile shear or recycling equipment project requires fabricated mounts, brackets, structural components, linkage, guards, or other one-off parts, Iron Ax also provides custom heavy equipment fabrication .
Common Mobile Shear Cylinder Problems
Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities
Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.
Heavy-Duty Recycling Equipment Experience
Iron Ax has decades of experience manufacturing and working with heavy-duty recycling equipment, including mobile shears and other scrap-processing machinery. That background gives us practical experience with the extreme forces, heavy construction, mounting systems, hydraulic components, and operating conditions found in scrap and demolition applications.
When a mobile shear cylinder problem involves more than seals, Iron Ax has the hydraulic, machining, welding, fabrication, and manufacturing capabilities to evaluate the complete problem rather than only one component.
Custom Replacement Mobile Shear Cylinders
Replacement mobile shear cylinders can be expensive, have long lead times, or be unavailable for older, modified, imported, or specialized attachments. When repairing the original cylinder is not practical, Iron Ax can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder using the existing cylinder, measurements, drawings, equipment information, or available specifications.
Our ability to manufacture rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounts, and other components in-house allows us to provide a complete solution without sending different parts of the job to multiple suppliers.
What to Bring or Tell Us
Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture New?
Not every mobile shear cylinder should be handled the same way. Some cylinders only need repacking. Others require a rod, barrel, gland, piston, mount, clevis, pin, bushing, or other component to be repaired or replaced. In cases involving severe damage, unavailable parts, an obsolete cylinder, or a long replacement lead time, manufacturing a replacement may be the more practical solution.
Bring the problem to Iron Ax. We can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and help determine the most practical repair or replacement approach.
