Roll-Off Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders used on roll-off trucks, hooklift trucks, container handling systems, waste hauling equipment, recycling trucks, and other heavy-duty hydraulic truck applications.

Roll-off equipment depends on hydraulic cylinders to raise, lower, load, unload, position, and secure heavy containers. When a cylinder begins leaking, drifting, bypassing internally, develops a bent rod, or suffers barrel or mounting damage, the truck may be unable to load or unload containers and can quickly become an expensive piece of equipment sitting idle.

Iron Ax combines hydraulic cylinder repair with in-house machining, chrome rod manufacturing, cylinder barrel manufacturing, welding, fabrication, and custom component manufacturing. That allows us to handle repairs that require more than simply installing another seal kit.

Roll-Off Hoist Cylinder Repair

The hoist system raises and lowers the roll-off frame so containers can be loaded, unloaded, and positioned. Hydraulic cylinders used in these systems may operate under substantial loads and experience frequent cycling throughout the workday.

Seal failure, internal bypassing, rod damage, barrel wear, mounting problems, and contamination can reduce lifting performance or prevent the hoist from holding position properly.

Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder, evaluate the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, clevises, mounts, and internal components, and determine whether the cylinder requires repacking, rebuilding, machining, or replacement parts.

Hooklift Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Hooklift systems use hydraulic cylinders to lift, pull, position, and unload containers and bodies. Depending on the system design, the equipment may use multiple cylinders working through a hook arm, jib, lift frame, or articulated linkage.

These cylinders can experience heavy loading and repeated extension and retraction. Problems may include external leaks, internal bypassing, bent or damaged rods, scored barrels, worn glands, damaged pistons, cracked clevises, or worn mounting components.

Iron Ax can evaluate hooklift cylinders individually and determine what repair or component manufacturing is required to return the cylinder to service.

Bent Roll-Off Cylinder Rod Replacement

A bent hydraulic cylinder rod can damage seals, wear the gland, create side loading, score internal components, and contribute to repeated cylinder failure. On roll-off trucks, rod damage may result from overload, impact, misalignment, worn mounting points, or excessive movement in the hoist or hooklift structure.

Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house. We can machine the required diameter, threads, shoulders, grooves, retaining features, rod eyes, clevises, and other details required by the original cylinder design.

Manufacturing the replacement rod in our own machine shop allows the rod to become part of the complete cylinder rebuild without depending entirely on the availability of an OEM replacement.

Cylinder Barrel Repair and Replacement

Roll-off truck cylinder barrels can become scored, worn, corroded, damaged, distorted, or otherwise unsuitable for continued use. Internal barrel damage can contribute to hydraulic bypassing, seal failure, poor lifting performance, or loss of holding ability.

Iron Ax can inspect the barrel and determine whether it is suitable for reuse or whether replacement is required. When practical, our machine shop can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder barrel in-house.

Gland and Piston Manufacturing

A cylinder that initially appears to need only seals may contain a damaged gland, piston, wear surface, thread, or other internal component. Older roll-off equipment may also use components that are difficult to obtain separately.

Iron Ax manufactures hydraulic cylinder glands and pistons in-house when replacement manufacturing is appropriate. This gives us additional repair options when the original components are damaged, obsolete, or unavailable.

Clevises, Rod Eyes, Pins, Bushings, and Mounts

The hydraulic cylinder is only one part of the roll-off hoist or hooklift system. Cylinder pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, mounting ears, and equipment-side bores must remain properly aligned as the frame raises and lowers.

Worn pins and bushings can create excessive movement and side loading. Damaged mounts or elongated bores can force the cylinder out of alignment and contribute to bent rods, gland wear, seal failure, cracked mounting components, or repeated cylinder problems.

Iron Ax can manufacture replacement pins and bushings and can evaluate damaged clevises, rod eyes, mounts, bores, and related structural components when the repair extends beyond the hydraulic cylinder.

If a roll-off cylinder keeps failing, the problem may be in the mounting points, pins, bushings, or hoist structure—not only inside the cylinder.

Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities

Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.

Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.

When a roll-off cylinder needs more than seals, Iron Ax has the machining and manufacturing capabilities to repair or manufacture damaged components in-house.

Large Roll-Off Truck Hydraulic Cylinders

Roll-off and hooklift systems can use long, heavy hydraulic cylinders that are more difficult to handle than ordinary industrial cylinders. Iron Ax is equipped for small and large hydraulic cylinder repair and has specialized handling capabilities for larger components.

For an unusually long or heavy cylinder, call before transporting it. Approximate cylinder length, rod diameter, bore size, weight, photographs, and truck or hoist information can help us prepare for unloading and determine the best setup for the repair.

Obsolete and Hard-to-Find Roll-Off Cylinders

Older roll-off bodies, hooklift systems, imported equipment, or discontinued hoist models may use hydraulic cylinders and components that are expensive, backordered, obsolete, or difficult to obtain.

Iron Ax can evaluate the original cylinder to determine whether it can be repaired using newly manufactured rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, or other components rather than replacing the entire cylinder.

When the original cylinder is too badly damaged or a practical replacement is unavailable, we can also evaluate whether manufacturing a custom replacement hydraulic cylinder is appropriate.

Custom Replacement Roll-Off Hydraulic Cylinders

A complete replacement cylinder may be difficult to source for older or modified roll-off systems. Iron Ax can evaluate the existing cylinder and equipment application to determine whether manufacturing a replacement is practical.

Useful information may include bore size, rod diameter, stroke, retracted and extended lengths, mounting dimensions, pin sizes, port locations, operating pressure, drawings, part numbers, and the original cylinder itself.

Because roll-off hoist and hooklift cylinders operate as part of a loaded lifting system, each custom replacement project must be evaluated individually before manufacturing begins.

Our Roll-Off Cylinder Repair Process

1. Inspect the Cylinder

We review the reported problem, inspect the cylinder externally, and note visible damage to the rod, barrel, ports, mounts, clevises, and other components.

2. Disassemble and Evaluate

The cylinder is disassembled so the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, wear surfaces, threads, and internal components can be evaluated.

3. Determine the Repair

We determine whether the cylinder requires seals, machining, rod replacement, barrel work, new internal components, or a more extensive rebuild.

4. Manufacture Components

Chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, and other components can be manufactured in-house when required and practical.

5. Reassemble the Cylinder

The repaired components and new seals are installed and the cylinder is carefully reassembled.

6. Test the Repair

The completed hydraulic cylinder is tested as appropriate before being returned to the customer.

You May Not Need to Bring the Entire Truck

For most roll-off hydraulic cylinder repairs, the cylinder can be removed from the truck and brought to Iron Ax rather than transporting the complete vehicle.

If the problem may involve cylinder mounts, pins, bushings, clevises, hoist structure, or damaged linkage, photographs of the truck and mounting area can help us determine whether additional components should also be brought with the cylinder.

Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture a Replacement?

Some roll-off cylinders require only routine seal replacement. Others may need a new chrome rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, rod eye, pin, bushing, or other component before they can be returned to service.

When the cylinder is badly damaged or an OEM replacement is obsolete, unavailable, backordered, or impractical, manufacturing a replacement cylinder may also be considered. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and determine which approach appears practical.

Bring the Roll-Off Cylinder Problem to Iron Ax

A roll-off truck hydraulic cylinder problem can involve more than a leaking seal. Bent rods, worn barrels, damaged glands, broken clevises, worn mounting pins and bushings, damaged mounts, or obsolete components may all become part of the repair.

Iron Ax has hydraulic cylinder repair, machining, fabrication, component manufacturing, pin and bushing manufacturing, and custom cylinder capabilities under one roof. Bring us the cylinder and let us evaluate the complete problem.
