Telehandler Hydraulic Cylinder Repair
Iron Ax repairs, rebuilds, repacks, and manufactures hydraulic cylinders used on telehandlers, telescopic forklifts, rough-terrain material handlers, and other telescoping-boom lifting equipment.
Telehandlers depend on hydraulic cylinders for boom lifting, boom extension and retraction, carriage or fork tilt, steering, stabilizers, attachments, and other machine functions. When one of these cylinders begins leaking, drifting, bypassing internally, or develops rod or barrel damage, the machine may quickly become difficult or impossible to keep in productive service.
Iron Ax has the hydraulic cylinder repair equipment, machining capabilities, and in-house manufacturing resources required to handle everything from routine seal replacement to damaged rods, barrels, glands, pistons, mounting components, and custom replacement cylinders.

Telehandler Boom Lift Cylinder Repair
The boom lift cylinder raises and lowers the telehandler boom while supporting the weight of the boom, carriage, attachment, and load. Leakage, seal failure, internal bypassing, worn components, or mechanical damage can affect boom movement and the ability of the cylinder to maintain position.
Iron Ax can disassemble and inspect the cylinder and evaluate the rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, clevises, mounting components, and other internal parts. Depending on what we find, the cylinder may require routine repacking, a complete rebuild, replacement components, or more extensive machining.
Telehandler Telescope and Boom Extension Cylinder Repair
The telescoping boom is one of the defining features of a telehandler. Depending on the machine design, hydraulic cylinders may be used to extend and retract one or more boom sections.
Telescope cylinders can be long and may operate inside or alongside the boom structure. Problems may include external leakage, internal bypassing, drift, bent or damaged rods, worn barrels, seal failure, damaged mounting components, or contamination.
Iron Ax can evaluate the complete cylinder and determine what repair is practical. For long or specialized telescope cylinders, provide the machine model, cylinder information, overall dimensions, and photographs before transporting the component so we can prepare for handling and inspection.
Telehandler Tilt Cylinder Repair
Tilt cylinders control the angle of the carriage, forks, bucket, or other attachment. A leaking or internally bypassing tilt cylinder can cause the attachment to drift, lose position, or respond inconsistently during operation.
Iron Ax can repair tilt cylinders and inspect the related rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, clevises, pins, and mounting components for wear or damage.
Steering and Stabilizer Cylinder Repair
Telehandlers may use hydraulic cylinders for steering and, on certain models, stabilizer or outrigger functions. Leakage, seal wear, bent rods, worn mounting points, or internal bypassing can interfere with reliable operation.
These cylinders can often be repaired and rebuilt using the same in-house hydraulic and machining capabilities used for larger boom cylinders. When mounting pins, bushings, clevises, or rod eyes are damaged, Iron Ax can also evaluate those components as part of the repair.
Bent Telehandler Cylinder Rod Replacement
A bent hydraulic cylinder rod can damage seals, wear the gland, create side loading, score internal components, and cause repeated leakage. Rod damage may result from overload, impact, misalignment, damaged mounting points, or excessive wear in the equipment linkage.
Iron Ax manufactures replacement chrome rods in-house. We can machine the required diameter, threads, shoulders, grooves, cross holes, retaining features, rod eyes, clevises, and other details required for the cylinder.
Manufacturing the rod in our own machine shop allows the new component to be incorporated directly into the cylinder rebuild rather than depending entirely on an outside replacement part.
Cylinder Barrel Repair and Replacement
Cylinder barrels can become scored, worn, damaged, corroded, distorted, or otherwise unsuitable for continued service. Internal barrel damage may contribute to hydraulic bypassing, seal wear, loss of holding ability, or repeated cylinder problems.
Iron Ax can inspect the barrel and determine whether it is suitable for reuse or whether replacement is required. When practical, our machine shop can manufacture a replacement hydraulic cylinder barrel in-house.
Gland and Piston Manufacturing
During disassembly, a telehandler cylinder may be found to have a damaged gland or piston in addition to failed seals. Older machines may also use internal components that are difficult or expensive to obtain individually.
Iron Ax manufactures hydraulic cylinder glands and pistons in-house when replacement manufacturing is appropriate. This gives us additional options when a repair involves more than installing another seal kit.
Pins, Bushings, Clevises, and Cylinder Mounts
A hydraulic cylinder depends on properly aligned pins, bushings, clevises, rod eyes, and equipment mounting points. Excessive clearance or misalignment can side-load the cylinder and contribute to rod damage, gland wear, seal failure, or cracked mounting components.
Iron Ax also has machining, welding, fabrication, pin and bushing manufacturing, and bore-repair capabilities. When the telehandler cylinder problem is connected to damaged mounting components, we can evaluate more than the cylinder alone.
Repeated seal or rod problems may be caused by worn pins, damaged bushings, misaligned mounting points, or equipment-side wear—not only by the cylinder itself.
Common Telehandler Hydraulic Cylinder Problems
Complete In-House Hydraulic Cylinder Capabilities
Iron Ax has the professional equipment, experienced technicians, and in-house manufacturing capabilities required to repair and manufacture hydraulic cylinders of virtually all sizes. Our dedicated hydraulic cylinder service center includes a 26-foot repair bench, specialized tooling, and equipment capable of providing up to 40,000 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with our full-service machine shop, we manufacture hydraulic cylinder glands, pistons, chrome rods, and cylinder barrels in-house, allowing us to complete everything from routine repairs to complex rebuilds and custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturing. Larger cylinders can also be accommodated using specialized handling and setup procedures when required.
Long Telehandler Hydraulic Cylinders
Boom and telescope cylinders on larger telehandlers can be long, heavy, and more difficult to handle than ordinary hydraulic cylinders. Iron Ax has dedicated hydraulic cylinder equipment and additional material-handling capabilities for larger components.
For an unusually long or heavy cylinder, call before transporting it. Approximate length, rod diameter, bore size, weight, photographs, and machine information can help us prepare for unloading and determine the most practical setup for the repair.
Obsolete and Hard-to-Find Telehandler Cylinders
Older telehandlers and imported or specialized models may use hydraulic cylinders or internal components that are expensive, backordered, discontinued, or difficult to obtain.
Iron Ax can evaluate the original cylinder to determine whether it can be repaired using newly manufactured rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, or other components rather than replacing the entire cylinder.
When the original cylinder is too badly damaged or no practical OEM replacement exists, we can also evaluate whether manufacturing a complete replacement hydraulic cylinder is appropriate.
Custom Replacement Telehandler Cylinders
A replacement cylinder may be difficult to source for older, modified, imported, or specialized telehandlers. In those situations, Iron Ax can evaluate the existing cylinder and machine application to determine whether a custom replacement can be manufactured.
Useful information may include bore size, rod diameter, stroke, retracted and extended lengths, mounting dimensions, port information, clevis configuration, pin sizes, operating pressure, drawings, and the original cylinder itself.
Because telehandler boom and lifting cylinders can be critical to machine stability and load control, every replacement-cylinder project must be evaluated individually to determine whether custom manufacturing is appropriate.
Telehandler Brands and Applications
Iron Ax can evaluate hydraulic cylinders from many makes and models of telehandlers and telescopic material handlers. The repair is based on the cylinder itself, the equipment application, and the condition of the components rather than limiting service to a single manufacturer.
Our Telehandler Cylinder Repair Process
1. Inspect the Cylinder
We inspect the cylinder externally and review the reported failure, machine application, mounting points, and visible damage.
2. Disassemble and Evaluate
The rod, barrel, gland, piston, seals, wear surfaces, threads, mounts, and internal components are evaluated.
3. Determine the Repair
We determine whether the cylinder requires seals, machining, rod replacement, barrel work, new internal components, or a more extensive rebuild.
4. Manufacture Components
Chrome rods, barrels, glands, pistons, clevises, pins, and other components can be manufactured when required and practical.
5. Reassemble the Cylinder
The repaired components and seals are installed and the cylinder is carefully reassembled.
6. Test the Repair
The completed hydraulic cylinder is tested as appropriate before being returned to the customer.
What to Bring or Tell Us
Repair, Rebuild, or Manufacture a Replacement?
Some telehandler cylinders require only routine seal replacement. Others may need a new chrome rod, barrel, gland, piston, clevis, rod eye, pin, bushing, or other component before they can be returned to service.
When the cylinder is badly damaged or an OEM replacement is obsolete, unavailable, or impractical, manufacturing a replacement cylinder may also be considered. Iron Ax can inspect the cylinder, explain what we find, and determine which approach appears practical.
Bring the Telehandler Cylinder Problem to Iron Ax
A telehandler hydraulic cylinder problem can involve much more than a leaking seal. Bent rods, worn barrels, damaged glands, broken mounting components, worn pins and bushings, or obsolete parts may all become part of the repair.
Iron Ax has hydraulic cylinder repair, machining, fabrication, component manufacturing, pin and bushing manufacturing, and custom cylinder capabilities under one roof. Bring us the cylinder and let us evaluate the complete problem.
